Borg’s intimate portraits of strangers on the train reveal a poetic sensibility which speaks to a particular intimacy between artist and subject. These people are caught in moments of reverie or contemplation; in capturing these, Borg invites us to consider the inner lives of strangers as a form of shared human experience. These portraits evoke the train as a conduit, a liminal space but also a state of constant motion. Borg’s subjects seem to be experiencing a multitude of everyday epiphanies alongside the mundane realities of commuting. The drawings are beautifully rendered in pastel and coloured pencil, and though they have the freshness and immediacy of sketches conducted in transit, each portrait also captures something essential and enduring about the subject.
